Demonstration lessons at iThemba Pre-primary 10 May 2017
Three Africa A+ facilitators spent the day at iThemba Pre-primary demonstrating the A+ approach in action. In the morning the facilitators did five demonstrations lessons in the three classroom with the teachers and children. The Grade R children enjoyed a morning mathematics ring, followed by a story-treasure hunt-creative construction activity. The younger children enjoyed making music with rhythm sticks, and dramatising stories. In the afternoon the staff and A+ facilitators got together to reflect on the morning’s work. Below are some of the ideas generated by the iThemba staff:
⦁ “Involve the children more in activities so that they feel part of their learning and feel pride in what they do”
⦁ ask open-ended questions
⦁ use waste materials to make story aids
⦁ hide numbers and number names in the garden
⦁ build sandcastles while measuring sand and water
⦁ go outside for learning activities
⦁ use a story as a starting point for maths and language learning
