Kathu
As in Kouga, this project is a collaboration the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) and Africa A+ Schools (A+). The project is supported by Kathu Solar Park (KSP). Following a needs survey in 2022, 21 schools were identified to strengthen existing ECD programmes in the communities surrounding Kathu in Northern Cape. During July 2023, the A+ team undertook their first visit to Kathu, Olifantshoek and
Kuruman. The first step was to establish community relations and to meet with stakeholders of the KSP ECD Project. Highlights of the visit included A+ facilitation of a 3-day Facilitator’s Retreat, the initial process in identifying and appointing a team of local Community Facilitators who will continue to support the ECD communities in implementing quality teaching and learning programmes, long after the project has ended. As A+ is an arts- enhanced approach, an important aim of the programme is to enable adults to get in touch with their own creativity to fully understand the benefits of using the arts in all learning. The Retreat was followed by a week of visits to 13 ECD Centres, in the three areas, to conduct baseline assessments as part of a monitoring and evaluation process for the first cohort of trainees. We were warmly welcomed at all centres, where we encountered women of great courage, passionate about the health and welfare of the children in their care despite major challenges that they face. It was most encouraging to discover that there is a keen interest to invest time to grow and learn as teachers. In 2025, A+ will complete the second year, and begin the third year, of the 3-year programme of training.
