A+ iZinto is a permanent project and division of Africa A+ Schools (A+). It is a materials centre that collects, curates and displays discarded materials for creative teaching and learning. It is based on the Reggio Emilia approach in which the REMIDA serves as an integral part of learning. The collection includes everything from household recyclables, such as bottle-tops, plastic containers and lids, to wooden flooring, carpet off-cuts and fabric swatches. The centre also collects unusual objects that invite inquiry, such as large plastic bobbins and heavy duty cardboard tubes, as well as natural objects, such as shells and seeds. All contain creative possibilities! These objects are referred to as “loose parts” because they are not complete toys or artworks, but they have the potential to be combined in creative ways by children to make things in response to learning challenges presented to them. A+ iZinto offers short courses in how to use loose parts in teaching and learning.
